Uneven Surface
Jigsaw Artist Collective
Studio 9, Wexford
Part of a group exhibition consisting of artists who had all recently graduated called Jigsaw Artist Collective. The artists had all felt a little lost after graduating from college and felt like they were indeed on uneven ground trying to find their footing in the world of becoming a professional artist, theey decided to group together and showcase recent pieces that they had worked on.
This piece was a look at the marks humans leave, and have left since we discovered mark making. Messages left consciously and unconsciously can impact passers by but are all important in some way.

More Diverse Than Universal 2012
Wexford Arts Centre
As part of her degree year work, Karen had looked at how humankind tends to create an impression of another person based on clothing, skin colour etc. During the year a young american teenager called Trayvon Martin was shot in Florida and his assailant, a neighbourhood watch volunteer claimed self defence as part of Florida's stand your ground law. The teenager had been returning from the shop with a packet of skittles and an iced tea into a gated community where his father lived, but his killer claimed Trayvon looked suspicious, he was after all wearing a hoody and walking in the rain. In the aftermath many people were outraged and well known faces such as Muhammad Ali and some politicians and news anchors wore hoodys to show that it is not an item of clothing that makes someone a "suspicious" person. For an article of clothing with quite practical uses to be deemed as a possible threatening object is quite an interesting concept, does it depend on the wearer and what their age, gender or skin colour is?
